What Is Laminated Fabric Material?

Laminated fabric is a material composed of plastic coating bonded to fabric through heat, pressure, and adhesives, creating a robust yet waterproof material. Laminated fabrics can be found in rainwear, sportswear, and footwear linings; others offer extra comfort or mobility thanks to stretch capabilities.

Laminated fabric materials often used in lamination processes are PVC, vinyl, and PU leather. Polyurethane is another popular lamination material that offers soft yet flexible durability; ideal for bags and children's apparel that adhere to CPSIA (Children's Product Safety Act).

PVC and vinyl are both strong and waterproof materials, making them suitable for numerous projects. PVC can be used to craft clothes, backpacks, pouches, and purses while vinyl can be found in home furnishings such as furniture covers, window treatments, and drapes. Vinyl offers more rigidity but still has similar uses as PVC when it comes to water resistance - as evidenced by similar projects using each.

Both materials come in a wide range of colors and prints to meet your specific needs. If unsure, test a scrap piece before beginning a project with laminated fabric; its edges do not fray as easily compared to other forms of fabric but sealing raw edges will prevent deterioration and ensure water-resistance of seams.

Laminated fabrics can also be treated to provide additional special properties, including abrasion resistance, flame retardancy, heat resistance, and anti-static properties. These features can help enhance product performance while prolonging its lifespan; in addition to offering protective qualities laminated fabric is lightweight enough for multiple projects.

Although some manufacturers employ an exclusive coating and bonding process, there are other means of producing laminated fabric. In general, the fabric is produced from a base fabric consisting of cotton or polyester yarn that has been heating bonded together using heat pressure adhesives or glue; then a thin plastic film or coating layer is applied using heat, pressure, or adhesives to form a strong connection between its layers.

Laminates are ideal for projects that will be handled frequently or need to be regularly wiped down, such as lunch or makeup bags, baby bibs, spill-proof tablecloths and placemats, coasters, chair covers, raincoats and raincoats. Laminates also make great outdoor projects such as tents and backpacks; use flat-felled or welded seams in these cases so as to maintain water resistance and prevent delamination of the laminated lining.
